Engagement sessions have been around for quite a while now, and for most of that time, they’ve had a pretty straightforward formula. With the rise in popularity of social media and inspirational search engines like Pinterest though a lot of couples are getting more and more creative when it comes to planning their engagement sessions! As I have grown my business and focused on my creativity I’ve put together a list of inspiration for engagement sessions over the years that would be SO much fun for the right couple. Being based in Milwaukee I created my inspiration for engagement sessions with Wisconsin in mind, but these ideas can be applied anywhere you like if you’re willing to get creative! Check out my ten bucket list engagement session ideas for 2022 and 2023.
As day-to-day life is constantly documented with smartphones and social media becoming a general way to communicate, more and more couples are getting creative in planning their engagement sessions to create a more unique experience. Engagement sessions are more than just photos, they are an opportunity to have a unique and fun experience with your partner and capture this amazing point in life that you two are at! Your engagement is so much more than the everyday moments you capture on your smartphone. Creating a session that is truly different and unique to the two of you and your love is such an incredible experience and one I think every couple should experience! That’s why I’ve put together a list of 10 ideas for engagement sessions that can serve as inspiration for you as we plan your Wisconsin session.
Let’s set up a sunset session hanging out by the pool or running through the water! We can head to the local pond, one of the beaches that line Lake Michigan, or yours or a friend’s pool for your session. There is SO much to love and have fun with when you have a session featuring a body of water. This would include sunset and flash photos, hanging out by the pool or running through the water, and photos of the two of you splashing each other! There are so many options in Wisconsin when it comes to bodies of water, so there’s no shortage when deciding on the location for your engagement session.
Another option for my water lovers would be to plan out an underwater session. Renting out the local pool at night, or if you have a pool of your own, we plan a session where we are literally documenting your love but underwater! This type of session would have to be done in a controlled environment like a pool since we need some clarity in the water for your photos, and open water can get a little sketchy depending on the weather! Photos like this speak for themselves though and really are some of the coolest engagement photos you can create.
Channel your inner Kat from Ten Things I Hate About You, dress up in some thrifted denim or overalls and have a paint fight! We will meet for sunset at a local park or in your backyard, set out your favorite colors of paint and you can take turns painting each other. Or you can go paintball style and battle it out with your lover with some paint-filled water balloons. It’s such a creative way to spice up your engagement photos and is a TON of fun in the process.
This one is for the music lovers out there! There is something so homey and fun about a record shop. Whether you’re perusing the artwork that lines the aisles or giving your next vinyl purchase a test run on the record player, there is SO much fun you can have when you plan a session at your favorite record shop. Find an album that means something to the two of you in your relationship and purchase it for an engagement session souvenir! There are SO many cute record shops in Milwaukee like Lilliput Records, and Acme Records, that would be the perfect spot for your engagement session.
Thrift Shopping
This is one of my favorites and is so much fun for an engagement session in Wisconsin! We will work together to find the closest thrift store, you two will have 15 minutes to pick out a surprise outfit for one another, and another 15 minutes to pick out outfits together. We will change into outfit number one and walk around town documenting every sweet moment that comes with the evening. Then later on we can do a quick outfit swap before we finish the night and our session together. We can have our session at the local Goodwill or your favorite vintage shop!
Plan a picnic with some takeout from your favorite restaurant. You and your partner can pack up all your favorite foods, some flowers, and maybe even some fun drinks so you can cuddle on a cute picnic blanket and enjoy your date night out! We can even do a bit of light hiking if there are some easier trails in the park that we choose to head to, and Wisconsin is filled to the brim with amazing outdoor spaces perfect for a picnic engagement session. Some of my favorite parks for a picnic are Lions Den Gorge and Grant Park Beach in Milwaukee!
Head to a super fun outdoor ice cream spot for a date night and some cute photos! There’s nothing I love more than documenting the sweet feeling of a summer night in Wisconsin for an engagement session at Kopps or Kiltie near Milwaukee. We can get so many cute photos of the two of you sharing your ice cream, walking around town and loving on one another.
Late Night Date Night
There are SO many unique ways to plan a late night engagement session. Spend a night out on the town with your partner and come home knowing you got some amazing photos! Start your night out with a drink at your favorite local bar and then spend the evening exploring the downtown. We can play with all types of light too, like your car’s headlights, the glow of your local 7 eleven, or even lights of our own like sparklers or candles. Wisconsin is home to some of the cutest downtowns in the Midwest too so we’ll be set for a setting when it comes to your engagement session.
If you’re looking to do something a bit more adventurous and dressed up for your engagement session I am down to help you plan and head out on an epic hike. Whether we’re heading up a mountain, or discovering a hidden waterfall if you’re down to wear a dress or suit and head somewhere epic for your engagement session I am in! Wisconsin is known for its incredible outdoors and hiking trails with a ton of variety, so whatever you’re looking for for your engagement session we’ll be able to find it!
Rock Climbing
Rock climbing indoors and outdoors makes for such a great date night activity and could make for some real fun engagement photos. Reenact the iconic spider man scene, climb somewhere epic, or head to your local gym and set up at your favorite climbing wall. There are a lot of different poses and angles we can play with during a rock climbing session so we can really let our creativity run wild! Wisconsin has both outdoor locations as well as indoor so whichever you’re feeling for your engagement session we’ll be able to do. Some of the most popular spots are at Devil’s Lake State Park and Interstate State park are two awesome locations perfect for a rock climbing engagement session.
